Teachers and dentists.. pay rise?!

I'm sorry but what?!

So nurses (due to contract blah blah), junior drs (most likely to actually be on the frontline) don't get a pay rise.

Social workers, frontline NHS admin staff (receptionists etc) don't get ****.

But teachers (the majority of which have been absolutely chilling for 4 months), dentists (who haven't been able to provide any normal care) and GPs (who've been basically just doing phone appointments and get paid an absolute fortune already) get increases.

Am I crazy or is that utterly insane?!

Agree on teachers payrise don’t mind that at all, but not sure what dentists have been doing as I have been trying to get into one for a couple of weeks for a broken cap and I can’t get in as they aren’t allowed to drill.

It’s insane that the NHS frontline workers have not got well deserved pay rises in line with the other professions mentioned, it’s also insane that the teachers pay rises are not being paid for straight away by the government but coming directly out of existing LEA and Trust budgets.

I'm sure you're fishing but I'll reply anyway. The majority of teachers haven't been 'absolutely chilling for the last four months'.

Erm tell that to my mates who most definitely have been chilling. Tell it to one of my assistant head friends who struggled to even get enough staff to cover any virtual lessons.
On average my mates have been working 2 days a week.

Just to add there are some teachers like my assistant head mate who's been working his fingers to the bone. He should be getting an increase but to give it carte blanche to all of them is doing those people who pulled their finger out a disservice.

The actual point of the the thread is the people who have actually suffered the most and earn the least aren't getting anything Vs those that are.

My dentist can now upgrade his Maserati to a Ferrari then for doing no work these past 3 months?

Madness.

Ive needed a dentist since the first week of lockdown. I still can't get in due to the no drilling. I get it as all that water flying everywhere like a mist. I'm fortunate it doesn't hurt (just a bit of tooth sheared off at the back)

I'm not sure about school teachers chilling. They have been doing lesson plans etc but they've still had it 'easy' (my next door neighbour is one and spends all day sunbathing with a gin😂).

The one resounding thing is the lack of payrise for nurses and also the hall porters etc. This isn't just based on covid. I spent one night in hospital and realised what a job they do.. Cleaning up sh*t/sick and changing drawings all night etc. It's a thankless job and some of them are on p*ss poor wages (I am confident I earn more for a fraction of the work or time spent getting qualified).

After all the government 'NHS drive' its soon slipping back to being taken for granted. I am sure they would all prefer a payrise or free parking rather than some fecker clapping for them👍

Strange. I'm a teacher and I worked my socks off, as did every other teacher I know.

Anyway, you've had the wool pulled over your eyes a little by recent statements. The pay increases were already planned before covid19. They have just been announced in a way that makes this seem like a reaction to recent events. It also isn't a carte blanche 3.1% award for all teachers, as far as I'm aware.

Oh, and the nurses are also still getting the pay rise that was agreed before. They are currently heading towards the end of their three year pay agreement. Not saying that they don't deserve more, they definitely do.

My tooth is the one next to my front tooth, it’s awful and making me feel like crap. The temporary kits are no good. Can’t wait for them to allow drilling soon

The teachers i know have been generally chilling (and now have 7 weeks holiday!) but i have no idea on their pay etc so can't comment on the general requirement for a payrise. The anticipation was that it was those on the frontline who would be rewarded. I'm pretty sure nurses/midwives etc getting a payrise would be more necessary than a dentist.

I work closely with a dentistry service and they have all been working relentlessly as they provide emergency services. They deserve every penny, and I know there was a lot of stress, especially early on with ambiguous guidelines on protection and poor PPE access.

Teachers similarly, certainly the higher level worked to the bone. I do not know any that were on jollies, but it doesn't surprise me some were. I suspect that reflects the person and the level of work they choose to do also.

Decisive when you announce x get a payrise and y do not- I do think this government plan this. Especially hard hitting when the payrises just come out of the existing budget- i don't know if budgets are increasing to support this or not.

Certainly might have been something to distract from

I’m no great fan of teachers generally, and often think they’ve got things a bit better than they realise. However, what the hell do I know? I’m not a teacher and I’m not friends with any. I do know that they don’t half get a bashing from the public at every opportunity and more often than not, it’s completely misguided, unfair and baseless. It’s all too easy to use them to distract from the real arguments.
Surely it shouldn’t be about which professions deserve a pay rise more than others? It’s not the fault of teachers and dentists if they are awarded pay rises and care and NHS staff aren’t. Surely any bashing should be directed to those awarding the pay rises, not those who happen to get one.

Yes indeed.
The ‘prioritisation’ does appear odd as this is supposed to be related to ‘Covid‘ response.
They could easily have done something for nurses but its politics.
This gets them some headlines then they will be a bit more generous to nurses next year when the pay review happens - more good news.

Should have bunged each nurse £500

A couple of my mates who are teachers have done next to nothing these last 3/4 months. They've wanted to work and do more to be fair.

Figured this would be the case regarding the pay increase which is fair enough, I haven't had one this year yet but generally do.

That said when you say every teacher you know has worked their socks off I say... I don't believe you. 😉

As can be seen by the umpteen responses on this thread, many of us have teacher mates and talk to those mates regularly.

Not to mention that head who came out and blew the whistle to then immediately be discredited as a nutcase.

It has been dressed up as a covid response, when in truth, it was already in the pipeline. Was originally announced in January.

That's because you don't know the teachers that I do. They have honestly all worked hard, under very unusual conditions.
