Below is the article by Craig Johns in this morning`s Gazette - quoting Michael Carrick`s response to Oli Norwood. Also included is the original article, reporting the comments Norwood made concerning our convincing 3-1 demolition of him and his team at their place.

Intro:

* Norwood had a dig at Boro before the Blades FA Cup match against Manchester City.
* It appears the [Boro] noise upset him and his team mates.
* To recap: Robinson was arguing with his own fans during his shambolic display.
* Norwood attempted to chop down Boro in his usual limited clogging performance.
* Blades fans were castigating their team and booing their wretched display from the moment Boro began to sweep aside the Sheffield outfit.
* Boro`s performance was so convincing that Norwood`s "Manager" was riled enough to kick the third ref`s time/sub board - and was sent to the stands.
* Blades fans were so convinced by their teams performance, they began leaving their old ground 20 minutes before the referees final whistle.
* The singing of our loyal joyous fans celebrating the superb 3-1 victory at full time - was the only noise we could hear in a quickly deserted stadium.

Michael Carrick responds to Oliver Norwood's criticism of Middlesbrough after Sheffield United win

Oliver Norwood had accused Middlesbrough of 'thinking they were promoted' after beating Sheffield United

Michael Carrick has dismissed accusations that Middlesbrough were over-zealous in their celebrations after beating Sheffield United back in February, insisting he prides himself on being respectful.

Boro recorded a big win at Bramall Lane back in February which at the time brought Boro right back into the hunt for automatic promotion. As it's transpired, they just couldn't sustain their fine form, with the Blades now needing just three points from their final four games to secure their spot in next season's Premier League.

Despite that, Boro's celebrations after that important victory have clearly played on Norwood's mind who, unprompted during his FA Cup semi-final preview press conference, appeared to accuse Boro of celebrating like they were already promoted and suggesting the noise made in the tunnel after the game only served to motivate the Blades to ensure they got over the line.

Carrick looked completely perplexed when made aware of what the Sheffield United midfielder had said, and was resounding in his response of the criticism. The 41-year-old said: “I don’t think we did. I certainly didn’t think we were promoted because we weren’t."

"I don’t think we were disrespectful, and I’d pride myself on that, to be honest. I think it was a big win at the time because Sheffield United have had a great season. They deserve to be where they are in the table and credit to them for that."

While Boro almost certainly will lose out on a top-two place to Sheffield United this season, the rivalry could still be renewed next season if Boro can come through the play-offs to earn promotion. Whether or not Norwood would be involved is another question altogether, however. The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season.

"One team beat us and thought they were promoted in February, which was interesting. You can’t get too carried away and you can’t get too low. It's a different mentality within the group and for us players who've been through it, we've been guiding the ones who haven't at times and keeping calm heads. I think we’ve done that really well.

"The noise they were making in the tunnel probably lit the fire in us to say ‘no, that’s not happening’. We've been through it, we understand there are going to be highs and lows. You can't win every single game in football. It’s near on impossible, especially in the Championship.

"Our mentality's been the same all the way through and has been the same from when Hecky took over to now. If we lose a game, pick the bones out of it, park it and move on to the next one. The teams who are most consistent are the most successful.

"It's a marathon. Some teams set off in a sprint and they're at the bottom now. Others pick it up and Coventry are a prime example. You can't underestimate having a group who've been through it before and know what it takes. We’ve put ourselves in a position where we can earn the right to go back to the Premier League.

* Sheffield United were roundly beaten by Manchester City in the FA Cup Semi-Final. City barely got out of second gear against the toothless cloggers.

PS:
Neither Norwood - nor any of his fellow Blades were winners of the EFL PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2023!

They’re promoted, and they deserve it. Good luck to them. Unfortunately we gave them a 17 game head start.

We need to focus on getting over the line and joining them in the Premier League.

3 games away from the top flight. Do everything to get the job done, then once it is, drive to Sheffield and ram the newspaper with these comments down his throat.

Seem to remember before that Match, Heckingbottom was going to "choke the life out" [of Boro]?!

Heckingbottom is a limited manager who'll quickly get sussed out (and sacked) in the premier League. You can just about get away with an attritional grinding approach in the championship if you have quality players.

They're hardly steamrolling teams as it is. Those 1-0s will quickly turn into 0-0s and 1-0 defeats against better sides.

I suspect on some level they know they're lucky Wilder wasted our start to the season and they're not really the second best team in the championship. A lot of bitterness on display for a team who are pretty much promoted, almost as if they know deep down they got a bit lucky. It's as if we spoiled the achievement for them in some way.

Carrick just oozing class as per.

"...1-0 defeats"

I'd argue 3 or 4-0 defeats. They will get battered performing as they are, limping towards the PL.

Didn't used to mind Sheff Utd, but this season has shown what a classless, sh*t club they are.

Clubs are permanent it’s the individuals within them that lack class - like “Heck” and Norwood. They move on. Both probably sooner than later

Just watched the "highlights" on your post Roofie
I don't remember this match, with our three lucky breakaways.
The one l saw had Sheff U on top for about 20min then us giving them a football lesson for the rest of the game.

It's weird I never did mind Sheffield united until February and then we rattled them and their true colours came out.
End of the day they've somewhat spluttered over the line and it's embarrassing because we gave them a 17 game headstart.
They'll get to the Prem and get battered with that idiot in charge.

If we do make, ill look forward to 6 points.

They won't be there for long, Norwood out of contract in the summer, "Heck" be gone by October.

As a club they have financially gambled on going up, screwed FFP and not paid instalments on transfers......meaning this could put other clubs in financial peril. A big "FU" while they kept their fingers, toes and everything else crossed they will be promoted, get the £100m PL windfall and get away with it.

They are sadly not the only ones to do it. Gamble to get promotion and many have failed. Derby and Leeds famously. Sheff U seem to have succeeded for now.

That's true, although the way the club is currently being run (i.e. cheating) isn't a great look either. And that goes beyond just the manager and players.

Currently a pretty unlikeable club from top to bottom.

(Although I've got nothing against the fans).

To be fair to them, it felt at the time if we beat them at BL we would overtake them, but they have kept going. Its not been pretty to watch, they've had some luck along the way and ground out a few 1-0's. That said, if we'd have had Carrick from the start of the season, we'd be in a battle with Burnley for top spot right now.

All feels a bit like that weird rivalry we had with Burnley when we were promoted, can't say they bother me to be honest, suspect most will forget all this in a few months.
