For next year...the hubby and the daughter got Crete last year (I've done Rhodes and corfu in the past) so next year is my pick (even though the hubby has done Portugal in the past...but only as a boys golfing holiday).
Crete was amazing (gouves waterpark) so need inspiration

We've stayed in Carvoeiro a few times.
It's not too big and there are some nice little eateries.
It's quite hilly though if you like to walk a bit.
The bus is a great way to see other parts of the Algarve, and they're very reasonably priced.

I went to Tivoli Alvor last year and it was fantastic. Clean and modern. The hotel had its own little train to take you into Alvor but $10 taxi or 25 min walk back from centre if needed. Close to a great beach. It has a bus stop outside so you can have day trips into Portimao and Lagos and also goes direct to Zoomarine. The hotel also runs its own coach to ‘Slide ‘n’ Splash’ water park which was great when we went out of season (It would be too busy if you go in the summer holidays).

Went with Jet2 as a package and they were great.

So, the classic place Brits in Portugal go is the Algarve (and I most recently went in February). It's warm, friendly, the beaches are stunning (check out the Praia de Felesia, which is amazing) and the quality of accommodation is generally high, but, it is for the most part not very authentic Portugal - it's nearly all been built for tourism and a large majority of tourists are British.

If this doesn't worry you(or indeed is exactly what you're looking for), then Vilamoura/Quarteira would be an excellent choice - there's also a huge waterpark there and plenty to do. Otherwise I'd make sure you're nearer to Lisbon or Porto, both of which are fantastic
