Alex Gilbert

Well, from the very short period of watching Gilbert, he just looks a more rounded player than Greenwood, he has ability to keep the ball in tight areas, he has a better array of passing, he is very good at finding space between the lines…Carrick will work his magic with this kid, I will stick my neck out and say…we have another very good player in the mold of Hackney.

I don't think anyone said that about Gilbert, that I can remember.

He was definitely described as a failed signing, including by myself, as he cost nearly £1m as a first team player and has barely played at all, even when the squad was down to bare bones.

Nobody saw enough of him to even judge his ability.

Yep that's what I remember, everyone giving the club the benefit of the doubt, appreciating the long term thinking of the club recruitment strategy and accepting that the coaching staff may know more than your average fan.

It's what this board is known for...

I don't think anyone was giving the club the benefit of the doubt on it, and I wasn't claiming they did.

Just pointing out that nobody was calling Gilbert a Northern League player.

Silvera's definitely been called one by plenty of fans, maybe you're getting mixed up with him.

To be fair, it's probably what pretty much every football message board is 'known for'. I doubt FMTTMers are unique in rushing to intemperate judgement about each and every aspect of their beloved football team

Probably not, but it's the only one I read and so it's interesting when a player goes from non-league to Champions League in a few short months.

Seen more potential and quality today in him than I have in Greenwood since Christmas.

He may just stick around next season and be a good option for us.

Excellent today.
He's been getting a bit of game time, and definitely showing potential
Hopefully like you say he'll become a good option next season

Although he looked OK in pre season he was very slight and seems a lot more solid now. That may be purely age related or part of his development. Maybe Carrick didn't think he was physically ready for championship football at the start of the season.

Really liked what I saw of him today, I got the impression that he could play across the front three, one thing I don’t get with Greenwood.

Also dropped deep quite a bit in the second half and again, didn’t look out of place.

Gilbert will face far tougher opponents than a rank poor Cardiff, but he definitely has ability and it's a bit of a head-scratcher why he hasn't featured a bit more this season.

Just seen his interview on the club website - played it with class, I have to say. It's clear he thought he deserved his chance before now and also now he thinks he's in and he can stay in. Good. But he didn't show any bitterness, was humble, understood that he had to work for his chance. What you'd expect, yes, but well-expressed.

Was very complimentary about the fans also. All round good impression created. It's basically like we signed a new player. High hopes.

What am I missing here? I took a look and it just seems standard instagram account and hardly any posts?
I think that's the point: there's no point in being on Instagram unless every day you are making a video about how amazing your boiled eggs were and how you might break with your usual Starbucks order that morning because that's the way you roll.
Gilbert - loser!

The lad has regressed over the last 6 months, not improved, some of his more recent games he looked like he couldn’t be bothered frankly, case of too much, too young maybe. Even for £1.5M he isn’t worth a punt, carrick has improved many players but he hasn’t managed it with greenwood.
I don't think it's about regression. It's his first first full season of first team football and many young players will have a dip when that happens. I'm sure he will have learnt a lot from this season and build on it next year wherever he is.

Mind boggling that he's had no game time ahead of Greenwood and Silvera. Just baffling.

He looks a really intelligent footballer. Ability to find pockets of space and can see a pass. He's not a CF.

Yet looks ideal for a floating type role. It's weird how players kinda' appear'. It's like the year or so we had Hackney yet he never got a kick. Suddenly he gets thrown in by Leo and he looks the best CM at the club.
